The idea that changes everything
The problem and the solution are, quite literally, the same plant.
For two hundred years, Rhododendron ponticum has smothered Ireland's most precious woodlands under a dark, sterile canopy. Each year it is cut back — then burned on site or left to rot, releasing the carbon and wasting the resource. Rewild Atlantic takes that same biomass and converts it into something permanent and valuable, funding the restoration as it goes.
Atlantic temperate rainforest is one of Europe's rarest habitats — home to lichens and mosses found nowhere else on the continent. Ireland holds only 8,000–10,000 hectares of it, nearly all under threat from invasive rhododendron. Every hectare we clear is a hectare of ancient woodland beginning its journey back.
Everything starts with knowing exactly what is out there. A leaf-off multispectral drone flight in February maps the entire rhododendron population across a woodland — including the suppressed young plants a summer survey misses — so clearance is targeted, measured and complete.

The conservation and the craft are not in tension. The biochar we make funds more clearance, and returned to the soil it accelerates the recovery of the forest. They are the same thing.
Heating wood without oxygen — pyrolysis — drives off the gases and leaves a lattice of stable carbon. A single gram has the internal surface area of several square metres. It holds water, feeds soil microbes, and does not break down. The toxins in rhododendron are destroyed in the process.

What the rhododendron leaves behind, we fill with carbon.
When an invasive root ball is lifted from the forest floor, it leaves a cavity in freshly disturbed ground. We pack that cavity with biochar — locking stable carbon into the soil for centuries, rebuilding its structure, holding water through dry spells, and giving the soil microbes and native seedlings that follow the best possible start. The carbon the plant spent decades fixing stays in the ground, restoring the very soil it once smothered.
