Atlantic temperate rainforest is one of Europe's rarest habitats — and invasive rhododendron is destroying it. This is why we do the work. Every hectare cleared is a hectare of ancient woodland beginning its journey back.
What rhododendron does
Once established, rhododendron forms a dense canopy two to five metres tall. The shade kills the ground layer entirely — bryophytes, ferns, bilberry, oak and birch seedlings. Its leaves contain grayanotoxins that render the litter biologically inert.
A mature infestation has no understorey, no regeneration, and a soil microbial profile that takes a decade to recover. The bird life is absent. The invertebrates are gone.
Why this matters to Ireland
Atlantic temperate rainforest supports lichen and bryophyte communities found nowhere else on the continent. It survives in fragments — Killarney, Glengarriff, Glenveagh, the Ards Peninsula — and almost every one is under active threat.
When it is removed correctly
Cut at ground level, stumps treated, followed up over several years to catch regrowth — and within two to three years native seedlings establish, mosses and ferns return, and the suppressed soil microbial communities recover. This is documented across Killarney, Glenveagh and the Scottish Highlands.
The biochar closes the loop: backfilled into root cavities and returned to degraded soils, it accelerates the recovery of soil biology in measurable terms.

Imagine that same forest in fifteen years — the oak canopy restored, the floor carpeted with ferns, the streams running clear.
Recovering ~500 hectares over a decade is about 5% of Ireland's Atlantic rainforest — a material national contribution, the kind historically delivered only by state agencies and large NGOs. A single small private operator at this scale is unusual.
